No matter what they say, first impressions matter and what you eat is a big part of that first impression. Ladies listen up, I’m not saying order a salad. Most guys I know actually hate that. But just don’t order something that’ll completely gross out your date – and this one’s true for both guys and girls.
Smelly Food
This one’s probably pretty obvious and most of us know better than to attempt garlic and onions on a first date. But sometimes it’s hard when they’re meant to be flavor enhancers. Cooked onions are better than raw onions but garlic is a bigger no-no for me because it’ll definitely eliminate the chances of a good night kiss; and if you’re planning a sleepover, you’re better off leaving before your date regains consciousness because the smell of garlic seeping out of your skin pores is much, much, much worse than stinky onion breath!
If I were you, I’d also avoid ripe cheese because as good as they taste, they could end up smelling like sour milk in your breath.
Food That Needs Careful Handling
As much as you might love seafood, if it’s served in the shell…you’re better off without it. Cracking the shell and sending shards of crab shell pieces flying across the table (or the room!) is funny or disgusting, and definitely not sexy.
Stay away from the ribs too because there’s no way you can eat them well with cutlery. And without the cutlery…well, looking like a carnivore with sauce trickling down your face isn’t as cute as you think. The whole bib and butter-covered face look is more like a messy baby and less like a dignified date!
Food That Won’t Let Go
I once had some spinach lodged in my teeth through the date and only realized it when I got home. I was so embarrassed but my date was a nice guy and we laughed over it on our next date. But ever since, I either do not order leaves that stick (even if it’s mint in a Mojito); or, if I have to have it, I make sure I check on my teeth after the meal!
Corn on the cob is probably best left out because not only will it get stuck in your teeth; eating it is a pain because there is no dignified way of eating it and you’ll have corn and butter all over your face. Ladies, you’ll probably have smeared lipstick too!
Messy Food
As much as you might love that big fat double cheese burger, I wouldn’t order it on a date. Burgers are notoriously hard to handle and something always falls out.
Also, most of us aren’t masters of spaghetti-eating so eating it usually involves lots of slurping noises and of course, sauce splattering everywhere (hopefully not on your date!). So skip the spaghetti and if you’d like to have that pasta, ask for shorter pasta like penne instead.
Some Tips
- Be considerate of your date when you order. If they’re vegetarian, the polite thing to do is to ask if it’s ok that you order a steak. Most probably won’t mind but the fact that you asked makes you a better person.
- If your date is paying for the meal, don’t order the most expensive dish on the menu – no matter how much you want to eat that lobster!
- If you’re picking the restaurant, go for something familiar rather than a brand new place. That way you’re guaranteed good food, good service and a good time.
- Don’t order too much alcohol. Getting drunk on a first date isn’t attractive!
Yes it’s important to be yourself but working a little hard to impress your date never hurt anyone. Considering it’s the first date and y’all are probably nervous, always order food you’re comfortable eating so you can concentrate on the date and not worry about the food.
