Where Have All The Black Men Gone?

All my ladies…this one’s especially for you. Have you ever asked yourself this question? “Where have all the black men gone?” You’re not imagining it. There really is a shortage of black men. Since I don’t expect you to just take my word for it, I’ll throw in some stats into the mix as well. How’s this? According to the U.S. Census Bureau, for every 100 Black women in America, there are only 70 Black men. Men in prison were obviously not considered for the census, assuming that most ladies wouldn’t consider them “eligible bachelors”.

Okay…so the bad news doesn’t end there. The Census reports also show that Black men are at the top of the list when it comes to interracial marriages. 9.7% of Black men are in interracial marriages, which is double the number of Black women!

The reasons are many and because I really don’t want to blame the men for it all – I’d say the girls are partially to blame as well.

The Men Complain: In short, Black women are becoming increasingly independent and therefore very aggressive. Men say its way too intimidating.

The Women Complain: Again, in short, Black men don’t live up to their responsibilities and are usually so spoilt by their mamas they expect their girlfriends to do the same.

Truth is, African-American women are often better educated than Black men and so they’re earning more, giving some men a complex. We ladies not only want someone we’re compatible with and a man who’s on the same level. But as Washington based therapist says, there aren’t as many educated and successful Black men in the same dating pool and hence the women feel they can’t find a man who’s good enough.

Maybe we’re expecting too much but maybe the men need to step their game up a bit too. Maybe our fantasies are little too rigid ladies but maybe the average Black man needs to realize we’re not willing to settle for nothing either.

Can we fix the situation? Is it time for us to stop dreaming of our Black Prince Charming and look elsewhere or is this just a passing phase? I’m not sure but getting a little worried here…what do you think?
